Yep, the Shindigs go on
Over at the Universal HD Firefly Message Boards you will find, on any given Saturday, a likely band of Browncoats gathering 'round to celebrate watching Firefly in glorious HD. Today 'The Message' is being aired so it's a particularly poignant Shindig. Although it isn't the last in the (shamefully short) season, it was the last to be shot, and all the cast and crew knew the series had been cancelled when they were shooting it. There are some great reviews of the episode on Scifi.com, Fireflywiki.org and Slayageonline.com. Being active on this message board it important because it's set up and monitored by UNIVERSAL. This is the studio who made Serenity, the studio who has the rights to any sequels, the studio we need to convince to make more! See here for all the information you need about Operation Full Burn.
There's prizes...!
And to tickle your fancy even more there are even door prizes available for people to win just for showing up on the Message Board. You need to be registered (which is free and takes about 2 minutes) and then join the special Door Prize Thread which opens for 15 mins from 8.00 pm (EDT), when the episode starts to air. This week is a really special prize - a copy of 'Done the Impossible' donated by the DTI team. Done the Impossible is a truly great DVD and on my list of must-haves for this year. In fact, I've just ordered it from the DTI website because, as a Mod on the Uni boards I can't enter the competition and I've been meaning to order this for ages. It's a documentary all about how Serenity came to be made and is full of interviews with all the stars, reviews, games and lots and lots of extras. Super shiny. And there's also another prize up for grabs, so you'd better get over there and find out what....
Jayne's Hat
I never get tired of talking about Jayne's Hat, and 'The Message' is the episode where he gets it in a package from his mom. Jayne is so happy with the hat and so chuffed he wears it there and then. I'll be wearing mine to the CSTS Vancouver Serenity screening tomorrow (if I can pry it off my daughter's head!).
It was never aired by Fox
One of the most amazing things about this episode is that it was never aired by Fox! Imagine that! You go to all the trouble and expense of financing a series then you show episodes out of order and don't even bother to show the last ones! Breathtaking, isn't it? Still, Fox is a changed beast these days so we mustn't keep old grievances alive. But still....they didn't even air it! I just cannot get into the mindset whereby they can effectively write-off such a valuable asset as worthless, not even bothering to pad the schedule with it. I think I'll go put on my Jayne's hat now -it'll help to calm me down....

Universal are showing 'Out Of Gas', a Firefly fans favourite in glorious HD today. To celebrate the Mods on the Uni-HD boards have stumped up a great door prize for today's Firefly Shindig - a copy of 'Serenity - Better days #3'. This is all you need to do:

This is a great prize and all you have to do is register on the Board and follow the above instructions for a chance to win that shiny comic. Couldn't be easier, plus by registering and participating it gets us that bit nearer to another Serenity movie. Everyone's a winner (well, there is only one door prize, but you know what I mean!). 100th Post plus other stuff
Didn't think we'd make it this far.
Back in February when I started this little Blog I didn't have any idea. Did it show? Possibly. Why did I do it at all? Well, there were many reasons. I realised that there was a whole world of interest for me that was simply passing me by. After being a very early adopter of the Internet I had fallen by the wayside. I only used it as a tool for work and not for what it was meant to be - a big ole sandpit. This was prompted by watching 'Firefly' for the first time and realising there had been whole fan campaigns that I barely knew about. It was a call to action, and I jumped right in.
Still in the closet?
Back then I would have classified myself as a firm closet geek with no intention or desire to change that. But now? Well, in my online life I'm firmly out there, geeking it up with the rest of them, and enjoying it wholeheartedly. This is spilling out into my 'real' life and you know what, it's not that scary. Small steps, but I think it's progress. And after the Serenity Screening in Vancouver on 22nd June who knows what might happen? I might even tell my mum that I Blog :)

There is so much still left to do - my first Fan Screening is booked but what about my first Fan Convention? Setting up my own domain so I can host both Blogs there and getting my freelance writing website sorted, getting another Serenity movie made, winning on Halo....there is much to do.

- Pink Raygun - because there always more to discover
- Realising that 'The Guild' was the start of something very big (and what a star Felicia Day really is)
- Starting WorldofHiglet's Weblog and Garim posting a link on Whedonesque

Jewel Staite Q & A, Plus - No BSG!
A week to reflect
Battlestar Galactica is not on tonight but will return next week. So, has this final season lived up to the enormously high expectations I had for it so far? Well mostly, yes. Without going into any details there has been some stunning set-pieces and some absolute jaw-dropping moments, and we were left with a cliff-hanger last week that really took me by surprise. There has been less explosions and more inferences and dark looks, but I don't mind that, especially if it is all building up to some spectacular fireworks.
What would YOU ask Jewel Staite?
It's getting closer to the Serenity Screenings and in Vancouver we are lucky enough to have Jewel Staite attending a Q & A before the screening. This is a real honour and makes the event even more special. I'm not sure how the Q & A works and I've never been to a panel (or any other type of event like this) so I don't know what to expect. So if I got the chance, what would I ask? What would you ask Jewel?
Waiting for the Post
I've been spending time on the Universal HD Message Boards. I have mentioned them before because of the Saturday Shindigs over there. Quite simply, these message boards have been set up by UNIVERSAL - the studio that funded Serenity, the studio that has the rights to Serenity, the studio that could produce a sequel, or three. Being active on these boards is important because the more activity, the more unique people over there, the more Universal can see there is support for a sequel (see this thread for more information). So Cordrone, one of the Moderators, suggested that I ask if Jewel knew about the Universal HD message boards. Because if any of the Actors (or Joss himself, he'd be welcome too...) posted on the Board it would really help to persuade Browncoats to rally to that one point (as well as all the other places we hang out at the moment). And it would send a message to Universal, too. So, if I get the chance I will ask Jewel if she knows about all the message board like the Universal one, and whether she would ever post on one. Worth a try, don't you think?

Saturday Review - Firefly HD, Battlestar Galactica plus sounds good!
'Shindig' in HD - tonight!
We have more reason than usual to thank Universal this Saturday. Not only are they shipping (at their cost) extra copies of 'Serenity' to the US in preparation for Can't Stop The Serenity, they are continuing the run of Firefly on HD. 'Shindig' is one of my favourite episodes, and has some great humorous touches, from Kaylee called Mal 'Cap'n Tightpants' to Mal stabbing the defeated Atherton at the end (see IMDb for a list of great 'Shindig' quotes). Now, for fear of being repetitive and boring, you can also celebrate by heading over to the Universal HD Firefly Message boards to join in the online fun. You can check out what time it starts using the 'Countdown Clock'.
Battlestar Galactica - Sitrep
We went out yesterday evening, and had a wonderful time. I know you wanted to know that. But, horror of horrors! I only realised when we got back that we had missed BSG.... It took some checking of the cable schedule to find that yes, it's being repeated today. Thank goodness. At least we can postpone the argument about who's fault it was! Hubby says it's mine because obviously he has no idea how to program the DVD recorder, so it's not his responsibility. I contend that since I always have to set it up, the least he can do is remind me. Jury is out on that one.
Sounds of Life
The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was a ground-breaking national institution in England. I remember my brother had one of their 'sound effect' records (yes, I mean actual vinyl) that we used to listen to, imagining all the weird and scary things that could make those noises. There is a fascinating article in the BBC Magazine yesterday which highlights how the men and women of the Workshop managed to produce such diverse and unique effects. The definite sounds of my Sci-fi youth, including the TARDIS, the Daleks and Quatermass and the Pit, were all created by the Workshop using equipment such as a key, a lampshade and Swarfega gel. It has video clips, too, which are well worth a look (and listen).
Freelance Switch
In a wonderful example of Twitter serendipity, I stumbled across John Brougher, and from there I found Freelance Switch. I'm a freelance writer and this is a wonderful resource. The website has forums, classifieds and also Freelance Radio - weekly podcasts. Now I'm still getting my head around all this new stuff, but these podcasts are really great. They are hosted by John with a panel and they are a great way to find out how other people make their living freelancing. I listened to the latest podcast, episode 13, which looks at the type of feedback you can expect as a freelancer. The speakers were all very knowledgeable and gave some interesting insights into how to deal with unwanted and unhelpful comments about your work. They also looked at whether you should share unrelated ideas with a client and ways to get around freelancers block. And it's just great to know you are not alone, sitting at your laptop in your kitchen all day, wondering if your manuscript is going to work this time.....

Saturday Shindig...

If not, you have not been paying attention! Stay behind after class and write "I will visit the Universal HD Firefly Message Board" 100 times.
ReaverDance
In a brilliant (and frankly disturbing!) twist on today's broadcast, Cordrone (a Moderator on the Message Boards) has posted a scary poster on today's shindig thread depicting 'Reaverdance'. Universal are showing 'Bushwacked' tonight in glorious HD, which should be some sight. Predator Vs Alien? They've got nothing on the Reavers! I can't be there at just before 8 PM Eastern Standard Time when it starts, but I'll be along later to see how it all went. The numbers were down a bit last week so a good showing today would be great. You really need to be getting over there just before it's due to air and then keep cruising the boards or posting because once you are 'inactive' (not clicking or posting) for 15 mins you are taken out of the numbers. Should be lots of fun on the Universal HD Firefly Message Board.

Come on over to the Universal HD Firefly message board to show your support during the broadcast of 'The Train Job' in glorious HD. We all want a sequel (or maybe more!) and this is a simple way of proving that people support Firefly/Serenity.

Counting down to the weekend
Getting ready for geek overload!
So, have you got your plans made for the weekend? Yep, me too. Gonna get myself all prepared for fun in a bun. It requires some planning (DVD recorder? - check! Remember how to program it? - it'll come back to me! TV guide? - that's what the internet is for!). Friday sees the next installment of Battlestar Galactica and I have no idea what is going to happen, not a clue as to who will do what next and I'm all the happier for that. I'll record it then watch, undisturbed, when the kids are asleep. And then I'll watch it again when hubby has finished work, being very careful not to look, move or make any sound that might betray what's going to happen next. Yes, Friday night doesn't get much better than that!
Saturday afternoon delight
Then, there's Saturday afternoon to look forward to. Last week saw a fantastic turnout on the Universal HD Message Boards (at least double the number of a usual Saturday) for the airing of the Firefly Pilot in glorious HD. This week 'The Train Job' is being shown and there's another Shindig arranged. Now I'm not great with time zones but luckily that's all been taken care of courtesy of Cordrone, one of the Mods (moderators) on the Universal boards. If you follow this link it will count you down to the Shindig wherever you are. Even I can get my head around that! So see you there.
Sunday down-time
And hopefully, tomorrow I will take delivery of my shiny new Softwire books, which means that I can spend Sunday in a world of my own. Or, more precisely, P J Haarsma's world. Another good reason to be looking forward to this weekend. Just got to get through Friday day, first!

There can only be one. Boss, that is. I like it to be me. I like to know where I'm going (broad strokes, you understand, I don't need to know all the parts). Most people get that and assimilate quite easily. Others, not so much. Of course, when you're related to people it makes it more difficult.
So, Minions then. After carefully crafting a raft of characters (ooh, that was good! You'd never know I'd not slept) I'm now faced with the prospect of fitting in a new, unwanted character. I thought the whole idea was that we were free from restraints, The Man was not going to interfere here, no siree. Well Minion/homeless #X needs a role and it's up to me to sort it. Apparently it's my Minion so I've got to do it. Where's the writers room when you need it?
Still.... we can move the story on if we have someone [....] with [...] in the [...] and then [...]. Yes! That might just work! And it solves the problem of [...]! The Aria is saved!
That's why I'm the boss.

Don't forget - a busy Firefly and Felicia night tonight!
I am so excited!
This weekend is turning out to be pretty special for a number of reasons, and later on I'll tell you about them, possibly in song or list form. There might be interpretive dance, but no promises on that score...
Felicia first
Felicia Day has blogged this morning about her experiences last night. After a last minute time-change and then other problems The Guild Improv didn't happen. Thankfully, the sketch show did happen so the fan(s) were not too disappointed. I think it says something about a person when they can openly say they made a mistake, try to correct it and then take the time to personally thank the person who did show up (and shared Doughboy yummies with him!).
So just to confirm -there is no Guild Improv tonight at 10.30. There is another Improv scheduled for April 19th in Santa Monica, more details to follow. But there is still the Lady Sketch Show on tonight at 8.00 at The McCadden Place Theatre (see Felicia's other blog entry for address details). You know if you can make it then you are guaranteed a good night out and you will be able to say you saw the ladies just prior to their international super-stardom. That's got to be worth a trip out.
Universal HD Message Boards - sitrep!
I know you know that you also need to be reporting in at the Universal HD Firefly Message Board for Operation Full Burn soon(ish) - just before 8 PM Eastern Standard Time. There is even a countdown so that you log on in time (handy for those tricky time zones calculations)! If you can join the boards (it's very easy and I can honestly say I have not had any spam or unwanted emails since I signed up) that's best because them Universal folks like to know we're not all the same person. If you don't want to sign up, that's cool too - just follow this link and be there. Any guesses on how many will come? I know - log on, and you can see for yourself!

So just to confirm -there is no Guild Improv tonight at 10.30. There is another Improv scheduled for April 19th in Santa Monica, more details to follow. But there is still the Lady Sketch Show on tonight at 8.00 at The McCadden Place Theatre (see Felicia's other blog entry for address details). You know if you can make it then you are guaranteed a good night out and you will be able to say you saw the ladies just prior to their international super-stardom. That's got to be worth a trip out.
Universal HD Message Boards - sitrep!
I know you know that you also need to be reporting in at the Universal HD Firefly Message Board for Operation Full Burn soon(ish) - just before 8 PM Eastern Standard Time. There is even a countdown so that you log on in time (handy for those tricky time zones calculations)! If you can join the boards (it's very easy and I can honestly say I have not had any spam or unwanted emails since I signed up) that's best because them Universal folks like to know we're not all the same person. If you don't want to sign up, that's cool too - just follow this link and be there. Any guesses on how many will come? I know - log on, and you can see for yourself!

Follow ups galore!
The world is spinning fast, n'est pas?
Take a deep breath and let's take a look now at some of the items we've covered over the last few weeks and find out what (if anything) is new...
Operation Full Burn
As I was neatly reminded yesterday, Serenity2.net posted about the 'Day of Action' called for by Operation Full Burn (a campaign to show Universal how popular Serenity is and how many people want a sequel). I'm sure that all you Browncoats out there have already joined the the Universal HD message boards by now? No?! Well get yourself over there right now and join! And while you are there take a moment to consider the number of threads and posts on the Firefly boards against those of the other shows. Firefly has 808 topics and 11,741 replies. The next closest show is Battlestar Galactica which has 16 topics and 45 replies.
All you have to do is join the Firefly message board and then log in on Saturday April 5th just before 8 PM Eastern Standard Time, just before they start to air the first epsisode in glorious HD. There is talk of having using the Fireflyfans.net message boards to host an online chat at the same time, so I'll keep you posted about that.
Star Wait and the liningup people
Not so much luck here, I'm afraid. I've still been unable to contact any of the people and my other lead appears to not be interested. But I will persist!
Dollhouse
I've not written that much about Dollhouse recently, what with my head getting all spinned about by Doctor Horrible. His Blog I mean, not Doctor Horrible himself...Anyway, filming should be starting very soon and a quick trip to Dollverse confirms that filming is scheduled for 23rd April. There is lots of other news about cast a crew on Dollverse and DollhouseTV.

Yes, this not working is really hard at the moment. I'm so busy I've forgotten what my home looks like in daylight. The Strike is taking it's toll on morale etc but onwards and upwards! Everyone gets why we need to do this so it's just a question of digging in and making sure we get the message to the other side. Note to self: must shout 'Panda Fur' at next picket.
And what doesn't help is that there is dissension in the Minion ranks. Apparently I said that Minion #1 could play 'homeless #30' or something in the New Thing, and now they all want a part. Well, I don't remember saying that - I could have said that they look like a homeless (as a joke), but really, have them in front of a camera? My camera? Conflict a go-go...

Operation Full Burn
A 'Verse to publicity
Having written last time about a new 'Faces of Serenity' petition I've discovered many and varied examples of other action taking place all over the, well, place. 'Operation Full Burn' is a shiny campaign that is completely free and requires so little effort it's embarrassing. But try to make that tiny effort if you'd be so kind. The idea here is that Universal is going to show the whole series in High Def (Yea!) starting in March 08. This is fantastic news and to maximise the impact "we get as many Browncoats as have ears to sign up to these Universal HD Firefly Fan Forums as we can. It don't cost nobody a nickle yet it lets Universal (makers of Serenity) know that we are still here and we still want more of the 'Verse. It's as easy as lyin." (quote from campaign lit).
So, a quick 'n' easy way to show your appreciation of Firefly/Serenity - go do it!

And another site well worth a lengthy visit is Fireflyfans. This is a beast of a site (in a good way), full of information and some very active message boards. A great place to find like-minded folk of the Joss-persuasion. Try the Caption Competition for some Firefly-fan-fun-n-frolics. I've added them to 'Further reading' section.
Conventionally speaking
So, where are you going this year? I've not booked any hols yet but maybe Mexico, LA, New York...no, wait! This is the year that I go to my first Convention. Yes, it is. Now I've done some quick research and unfortunately the Buffy Con at the Paley is sold out and the guest list is to die for. Nevermind. I need to get to see Joss this year, preferably at a Con that also features Firefly/Serenity. With Dollhouse finally underway Joss will be busy busy busy, but they'll have to be publicity...when I get some places shortlisted I'll let you know. In the meantime let me know where you plan to convene.

Which brings me nicely to the subject of comments/posts/reader. Now, I'm new to blogging (dur!) but I've got a good grasp of the essentials. I've made a sitemap (after much puzzlement), submitted it via Google Webmaster (very easily) and waited to be listed. I'm still waiting, so you and me could be here on our own for a while yet. I wonder if I'll be listed before I get the 'Star Wait' dvd? I know there is a couple of you out there (unless Google Analytics is up the spout) and don't think I don't appreciate you swinging by this way - I surely do. But more would be, you know, more.
England shock quake!
Yes, the earth did move for various people in England on Tuesday night with the first 'significant' earthquake there for 25 years. It was only 'significant' when equated to other British earthquakes, however, and compared with many parts of the world this earthquake was typically English - not too outspoken, didn't do much damage and went away quickly. A quick call to the old country confirmed that while it woke people up, no damage was done and all the family were right as rain.
