Star Trek trailer (oh my!) and more films you need to know about

I will not be swayed
I'm sorry, but I am hopeful and eager to see the new Star Trek film. We were discussing the new trailer (and many other lofty topics, of course) on The Guild chat last night. Some people are already gnashing their teeth about how the 'reimagining' has stomped over everything they hold dear and true. I understand this. The USS Enterprise, that most iconic of starships (well, that and the Millenium Falcon) has had a makeover and people are not a bit happy.

But this is a new venture. If it was the same as The Original Series or even the older films then what would be the point? The problem stems from the fact that it isn't The Next, Next Generation, it's remaking TOS, and that makes it more than little tricky. But I want to see how they do it before I condemn it. I loved the new Battlestar Galactica and they made Starbuck a woman! What's your feeling about the new film?

And the new film has Simon Pegg in it as Scotty. I love Simon Pegg - he reminds me of Channel 4 on a Friday night, slumped on the sofa watching Spaced. And Big Train. Good, good times. And his films have been brilliant: Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz are in my DVD collection. I went to his IMDb page and saw how many great TV programs and films he's been in. Brilliant. Oh, and he's on Myspace, too.

JSto - I love you, too
Artemis Eternal. If you've been listening closely you will have heard me talk about this independent film before. And Jessica Stover (JSto) was on my list of people I'd queue to see at ComicCon. I follow her on Twitter and if you want the skinny about genius at work, you should try it, too. I didn't realise it until recently but it's people pushing the boundaries of creativity that I find the most interesting. Jessica is one of these people. Check out her websitethe Artemis website and her latest videos and you'll see what I mean. EpicFU made her Fu of the week and they get how great she is - you need to know about her now so you can say you knew all along how great it was going to be. Become a Wingman and make a difference.

Jathia's Wager - you can contribute
The prequel teaser trailer for a the new collaborative film, Jathia's Wager is now released. If you want to take part in creating a film then this is the project for you. There is a script and initial casting has been done but there is still plenty of time for you to get involved. Go to their site and find out how.

Cap'n Mal's monkey and other happenings..

Terrifyn' Space Monkey - Nathan-style
Here's your chance to bid for a Terrify’n Space Monkey signed by Nathan Fillion - Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity. Nathan Fillion is also the co-founder, with 'The Softwire' author PJ Haarsma, of Kids Need To Read, a Literacy foundation that is helping to send exciting new books to under-funded schools and libraries across North America. This latest auction from Kids Need To Read runs until May 25th so swing over to eBay - the bidding has started already!

Wil Wheaton and Star Trek: The Manga
And there is another on-going auction by KNTR at the moment, too. I've not forgotten about Wil, I still lurk on his blog and follow him on Twitter, I just haven't got around to posting about it with everything else that's going on. But this auction by KNTR gives me a great excuse to do just that. In case you didn't know there is a now a Comic Manga series of Star Trek and this auction is of a copy of the second volume to be published by TOKYOPOP entitled Kakan ni Shinkou or "To Boldly Go." Ten assorted artists and writers present brand new adventures featuring the classic Star Trek (TOS) line up of characters. Wil Wheaton (a huge comic book fan) was one of the contributing authors and he has signed this copy. When he was first asked to write for it he blogged about how much of an honour it was for him. This is another great auction and it closes on May 23rd so beam over to eBay and get those bids in.

Jewel Staite to be full-time on Stargate: Atlantis
Over at Whedonesque there is the news that Jewel Staite will be staying on for season 5 as a regular. In a quote from sliceofscifi.com:

Also this season, Jewel Staite will become a full-time cast member as Dr. Jennifer Keller. Staite described Keller as growing more comfortable with her place in Atlantis this season. “She steps up to the plate a little bit more,” Staite said. “She’s becoming more courageous.”

Update on Other Blog
I've posted 'Future Entertainment Part 2: Anticipating Doctor Horrible...' on my other 'Worldofhiglet's Weblog' so feel free to pop over there and take a look.

All hands to the helm: Mr Sulu is up for auction

Kids Need to Read have another great auction
How's about that, then, boys and girls? An autographed, full-color 8×10 photo of actor George Takei as he appeared in the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country up for auction by Kids Need to Read. The auction is open now on ebay and runs until 28th March so check it out and get bidding. Kids Need to Read was set up by author of The Softwire series, PJ Haarsma, and actor Nathan Fillion as a children's literacy program and needs relies on income from these auctions. New items are added each week so it's really worth checking back often. Who knows, Cap'n Tightpants might auction some more of his goodies again soon.

Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog's brand new fansite
Not before time, a spanky new fansite has been set up for Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog . It is in the early stages of development at the moment but promises to be the hub for some pretty frantic fan-type shenanigans. Speaking of which, no word yet on where/when The Doctor (Horrible, not Who) will make his first appearance, but it is the subject of intense interest. As soon as Joss lets anyone know....

Buffy Reunion Paley roundup
The bone-picking continues after the Buffy Reunion but nothing else ground-breaking has been revealed. There's lots of video and pictures around and I've even seen a site that claims to have an audio of the evening. Some of the reports have been a little unkind about certain members of the panel but I think that is to miss the point. One small point in time like that could never give everyone what they wanted and we should be happy it happened at all.

It's over for Summer...
Apparently Summer Glau has a new movie and won't be able to attend the Starfury Con in London in April. That's bad news for fans but great news for her. There is still a good lineup for the Con, though, and it promises to be a great event.

Joss' Journal Jan 11 08
Ok, I don't get that much time to look at stuff on the interweb. And in the past that has cost me dear. I am trying to change (as will soon be revealed), but I just don't spend time surfing. But I know a man who does and he has sent me this amazing video (a 'Mash'?) of Serenifly and Wicked. So good I had to blog. Makes me get that wistful look in my eye again...Still, Mr Fillion is gainfully employed at the moment (yuk, yuk!) so...

And Minion #2 surprised me today by asking if I called them 'scones' (rhyming with 'cones') or 'scones' (rhyming with onze). I really do not know what goes through their heads sometimes....

Woody's Roundup
Buffy Between the Lines Season 2 is still looking for crew members; Nathan Fillion's birthday is on 27th March and you can send him an e-birthday card; BattleStar Galactica Season 3 boxset is being consumed at a great rate in time for the final season - and it really rocks!

Jayne's hat

What did you do today?
I know what I did; research, writing, house stuff and created some new links for the blog (as I'm sure you've noticed). I've also added the feed from the Kids Need To Read website. Co-founded by Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal Reynolds from Firefly) this site is updated regularly and raises money for reading projects. It's a great site that's well presented and a cause worth suppporting. They also have ebay auctions of all sorts of very exciting items and are at the moment auctioning a signed photo of James Doohan (I don't need to tell you who he was, surely). It's been so productive today the engines cannae hardly take it.

Feed the what?
But I'm having some trouble with feeds, so I hope that will be sorted out soon. If anyone has tried to subscribe using 'Atom' feed button at the bottom of the blog and had any problems please let me know. Especially if you know how to fix it!

A boy called Jayne
Actually I wanted to talk about the girl first. Jane Espenson's website is witty, well written (of course) and full of advice for aspiring writers. Her writing credentials are impressive and include Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Ellen.

Kneedly done
One look at the pattern for Jayne's hat (as worn by Adam Baldwin in Firefly) has convinced me that I'm better off either bribing someone to make it for me or buying one. And where did I see the pattern? On the Vancouver Firefly/Serenity meetup site.

Over and out
That's all for today except to say that Star Wait should be on it's way soon. And (wait for it) there are some follow up interviews in there! Thanks to Michael for that, I'm really looking forward to watching it.
