Farewell, MyBlogLog - Yahoo sets May 24th deadline

EDIT: One True Fan to the rescue!
As I wrote earlier, the feature of MyBlogLog that I will miss the most is the metrics, but help is at hand. One True Fan have announced that they will be replicating the classic MyBlogLog metrics and these will be available to MyBlogLog and One True Fan users. This is great news - thanks to the One True Fan team! They will be publishing more information soon.

Yahoo is finally pulling the plug on MyBlogLog
When I first joined, nearly three years ago, I thought MyBlogLog seemed like a great idea. A way to aggregate your online presence, track blog visitor number and create communities. I joined some communities, set up my blogs and waited for the good times to roll.

Promise never quite delivered
The aggregation always worked well, but once I discovered Friendfeed it became unimportant. The community side of MyBlogLog was never engaging enough to keep my attention. I did like the statistics if provided, though, and I will miss that part of MyBlogLog the most.

Delicious next?
News that MyBlogLog was going to be axed was leaked at the same time that Delicious was slated for removal. The massive outcry about Delicious meant some 'clarification' from Yahoo, then stated that they were merely looking for a buyer.

Sad email
MyBlogLog has no such reprieve, though, and I received my email from Yahoo today confirming that the service will close on May 24th:

It was short and to the point. It directed me to visit Yahoo MyBlogLog help pages to find out more. I did and found this:

I guess Yahoo has already disowned it's unloved service.

RIP MyBlogLog.

Why U2 probably won't join Quora

Quora - the Season's big New Social Media Thing
So what's all the fuss about? Quora has been described as "..Yahoo answers for geeks.." and I think that's quite accurate. It has been causing excited ripples in the Tech Blogger world in the last few weeks and received a massive upsurge in users following some positive reviews. I joined after Louis Gray mentioned that the recent improvements made it very useful. After a bit of poking around I started to see how it might be beneficial. I was even really pleased that Quora was generating interest in my go-to social media site, Friendfeed.

Easy to join
You can use Facebook or Twitter to join and sign up is easy. When you do it this way, though, you might overlook an important issue. At the moment, Quora has the following rule:

You have to use your real name:

"The rules of the site are that you have to use your full real name on your account. To change your name, please see How do I change my display name on Quora?.

If you are ever uncomfortable about associating your identity with a particular question, you can become anonymous for that question.  See How can I anonymously add questions on Quora?"

Bono: Not a Real Name?
While I understand that any site/app/whatever can make their own rules for the membership they want, I'm very puzzled by this. There is no verification process to go through for your 'real' name, and it doesn't seem that they can check it out. And people with the same names will do what? And what about poor Bono, who only has one name? Or The Edge, who has a silly 'real' name?

Or people who have new 'real' names, like Marion Robert Morrison?

What's in a name?
I joined using Twitter and filled in my name as World ofHiglet, since that was the most sensible way of fulfilling their requirement to have a first and second name. I've done that on a few sites. Many of the people I follow on Twitter are on Quora, so I connected with them easily and started to edit the groups Quora automatically added me to. I replied and followed some questions and posted one of my own.

It didn't take too long before I received a message from a Quora admin directing me to the name rule. I replied explaining that using my real name would make me more anonymous and asked whether the policy would change. Last night I received a message:

"A Quora admin blocked you from editing on Quora for this reason:

User needs to respond to name change request."

Of course, I had replied but I hadn't change my name. Obviously the only reply that is acceptable is to comply without asking questions.

Disagreeing with Louis Gray
That is not something I would do lightly. But in this case I do not agree with him fully. In his recent post about Quora, Louis said:

"Where I have heard people express concern about Quora is what could happen if it breaks into the mainstream and becomes diluted as sites like Yahoo! Answers have, suffering from the chatroom phenomenon that doomed other sites targeted toward casual discussions. Safeguarding Quora from this is the use of one's real identity, connected through Facebook or Twitter, and the community's ability to downvote or mark as "Not Helpful" responses that don't pass muster..."

I connected through Twitter with the name people associate with me, but that is not good enough for Quora. On the one hand I can see the reasoning behind it. But it isn't flexible or responsive and will keep some people who want to participate out. Maybe that's a risk they are willing to take to keep some spammers out, and if so then that is their right, of course.

In the meantime...
More people I know from Twitter, Friendfeed and Facebook are following me on Quora and there are questions and threads that I would like to participate in. I'm not sure what to do at this point, but I think I'll wait and see. Chances are that Quora will have to change their policy. And if they don't then maybe I'll have to change my name...

Facebook: Privacy FTW! Plus how to add a like button to Blogger

I'm on Facebook - are you? Have you changed your Privacy settings yet?
Note: Edited to include link to Louis Gray's discussion about the changes, below.

Social Media - I Love It!
Occasionally I have the urge to write about tech. Then I look at all the tech bloggers and know they have pretty much got it covered. Facebook has made some massive changes this week and you should really really make it your business to check out your profiles and make sure you are sharing the information you intend to. You might decide to leave everything as it is and that's fine. Facebook can now (with your permission) track you all across the web and all your likes and habits will be lovingly stored and pondered upon. The thing is that you might have already given your permission without realising it because you have to opt out of sharing.

Over to the Professionals...
Here's some articles you might like to read about the changes and what they mean. They range from "Oh my God the skynet is falling" to "Relax, all these corporations know all your secrets anyway". Share or share not, there is no "keep it the way it was". Just share whatever you are going to share knowingly (sorry but my go-to tech blogger, Louis Gray hasn't blogged about this yet. EDIT: Louis has posted a discussion on Buzz about this which is very interesting. Recommended reading.):

How do you Like That?
Having read all that (yeah, I know you read them all and you get a special invisible badge - go you!), you might have noticed that I've added a Facebook Like button to this blog (see the end of the post).  The reason I did this so quickly was in no small part due to an ace Friendfeed widget guru, A J Batac. AJ is a a great Freindfeeder who adds a lot to the community there and shares his expertise generously. After making a Wordpress Facebook like widget in super-quick time he then made one for Blogger. Because I asked him to. How awesome is that?? Thanks AJ!

It's really simple so go to AJ's blog and get the details if you want to add the Facebook Like button to your Blogger or Wordpress site.

Oh - and I'll be back to 'proper' business tomorrow with details about new webseries you are going to love...

My First Writerly Review!

"Turning Left..." is reviewed in "Always Go Right"
I had the best alert this morning - Google telling me that "Turning Left at Albuquerque" had been typed onto the Interweb somewhere! And sure enough the link took me to a review of the Turning Left podcast.

The sexy librarian
As Karnatos points out, we have known each other for over a year, and that's entirely Felicia Day's fault (so many things are!). We've chatted in The Guild chat, conversed on Friendfeed, caught up via Skype Chat and follow each other on Twitter. When I tweeted I was going to do a podcast of the book Karnatos was interested because he listens to audiobooks on his commute. He is also a blogger of some note on Always Go Right and the subjects he discusses range from The Guild and Whedonverse shows, gamer stuff, Star Wars, Lego, YouTube videos....okay he's a big geek like me!

Er, what about the librarian thing?
Writing and then podcasting has taken so much of my time recently that I've not been hanging around in my usual haunts or blogging as frequently as I used to. Trying to find an agent and actually working out how I can make a career out of writing is a long process. Part of that process has to be finding ways to promote what I have done. I am really grateful to Karnatos for taking the time to do this review, because it's exactly to sort of thing that will help. I didn't ask him to do it - it's something he has done because he enjoys the podcasts. Knowing that someone enjoys your work so much that they bother to listen to it (more than once!) and then review it is a pretty big boost.

Really - what gives with the sexy librarian?!?
So I hope you'll pop over and read what he has to say. And take a look around while you're over there. There are tons of great articles and probably some things you haven't seen before like  Quake Radio and a staged production of "Once More With Feeling..."

TELL ME ABOUT THE LIBRARIAN!!!
Oh - you wanted to know about the sexy librarian thing? Well....you'll have to ask Karnatos. He's on Twitter and he'll be happy to answer your questions....probably.... :D

Coming soon - Dollhouse update, YouTube info and a competition...

Everyone's doing it...
...trying to get back into regular blogging, that is. Yes, I've been hanging around FriendFeed and now it's time to get back to some real work! Coming later today:
  • Why I'm not panicking about Dollhouse (even though others are)
  • Why Friend Feed is not a waste of time
  • Why I'm taking a chance and launching a competition on my blog, with a real (virtual) prize!
I can tell that I've have piqued your interest....

A little teaser
You might want to do some prep work for the competition and if so, your homework is to watch the latest installment of my webseries -

Captain Hammer, Castle and quick roundup

These are not the Hammer...

But the new auction from Kids Need To Read has an official Captain Hammer teeshirt signed by none other than the Hammerman himself, Nathan Fillion. It's ok, I'm not going to do another big rant about how great Mr Fillion is, how his new series, Castle, has been picked up by ABC and will be airing in 2009, how wonderfully he plays Mal, Caleb, Captain Hammer or any of his other roles. Nope, not me!

All the details are on the Kids Need To Read website, and the auction is on eBay with a closing date of September 13th - so best hurray!

Dr Horrible and The IT Crowd - a match made in (geek) heaven!
See, Twitter tells you things. Like the makers of The IT Crowd, a wonderful sitcom by Channel 4, want to use Dr Horrible outfits in Season 3. And Dr Horrible, via Twitter, has now said they are in talks...this is very exciting!

What else?
Lots! I've been busy, although there's not much to show for it yet. I've also been spending far too long on FriendFeed Beta, although some of that time can legitimately be put down to research. And Felicia has Tweeted that there is to be a read-through of the first 8 episodes of The Guild Season 2 soon. And you know you are very tired when you go to check a Tweet, get distracted reading a debate about Thundercats on FriendFeed and then forget what you were doing...

Insight 101, Part 2 - what have we learned?

Sex sells?
Following on from the last post, you'll be interested to know there has been no abatement of the people visiting WorldofHiglet's Weblog looking for more information about Felicia Day in Hotel Erotic Cabo. But what else did we learn?

Social Media: it works!
Well, it does, up to a point. A lot of the traffic that comes to my blog comes from people who have seen my Tweets, or comments on Friendfeed, or who have found me on MyBlogLog. And I'm more than pleased to see that Kids Need To Read are now on Twitter! This could be the push you needed to sign up for Twitter at last. And check out the KNTR YouTube page...Yes, Social Media. I will have a lot more to say on this subject soon.

Who's got the answers? Search me...
The other thing we learned is that people search for the oddest thing. 'Boy Pants' - really? 'Velour Fetish' well...maybe. So I'll be keeping an eye on you. I wonder what the most obscure search item will be next week?!

A Freakily Horrible (in a good way) Week

As you are reading this, Dr Horrible may have disappeared
Well, free access on the Dr Horrible website might have gone, anyway. It's due to finish at 12.00 Midnight Eastern time tonight (July 20th) (which is goodness knows when - timezones are not my strong suit as evidenced in my earlier posts today!). Dr Horrible has tweeted this afternoon that it might be up a little bit longer than that but I wouldn't leave it to chance - watch it NOW!

It's been a rollercoaster of a week
The excitement of the launch of Act I on (what for me was) Monday night only to find it wouldn't work because I was in Canada, then finding an IP workaround and watching it straight away. Waking up on Tuesday to find the Dr Horrible server had crashed so no-one could watch it and the tension while the new 'monster' server geared up. Then the release of Act II on Wednesday and how smooth that was, and how GREAT Act II was (Nathan Fillion delivering the Best. Line. Ever.). And on Friday the prospect of two exclusive interviews: Felicia and then Maurissa and Jed on DoctorHorrible.net plus the release of Act III. The emotions of the final Act and the fan aftermath. All the posts on the Fan Site. Creating a Dr Horrible room in FriendFeed. And then - the question session on Whedonage with Felicia Day today. Phew!

What was it like, then?
Well, once I had realised that I had less than an hour to edit all my questions into one, kick-ass question, the panic set in :) Everyone on Whedonage was really helpful and as 10.00 am (here) came nearer more people started arriving. Felicia Tweeted that she had just rolled out of bed (fully made up, with hair smooth and shining, no doubt - she's an actor, after all) and she entered the chat room at exactly 10.02. And then asked if she was late - gotta love that girl! Unfortunately not long after that the host server went into meltdown and everyone got kicked out, which was a real shame.

Fear not, though, because it was a temporary thing. Simon from Whedonage got it back up and running and the questions were put to Felicia without any further problems. Well, for the people in the chatroom, anyway. Bad luck for me that my often-temperamental wifi decided to play up, leaving me shouting at modem, ISP and anything else in the vicinity. Bless. When I got back online  - Lo - there was a Twitter Private Message in my inbox from - gasp - Felicia telling me that the chat was back on. That made it all worthwhile and I headed back to Whedonage. By then the VIP room was full but I waited and chatted to the very friendly mod (whose name I have totally forgotten - so sorry!) and finally got my chance.

And yes, Felicia answered my questions. And yes, she really is as funny and down-to-earth as she appears to be. There will be a full transcript of the chat available fromWhedonage later this week, and that's not to be missed! Felicia has even joined the Dr Horrible room I set up in FriendFeed, and you can, too. Just go to the FriendFeed Dr Horrible room and join. If you're not a member of FriendFeed it's very easy to set up.

So that's been my Horrible week. Pretty great, huh?

EDIT: My subscription email from Joss'd the Podcast has arrived with more Horrible news - Joss himself is doing a live chat tomorrow (Monday 21st July). See the Joss'd article for more details. I've sent my question in!
